Olympus has had a busy week. Alongside launching the new E-M10 MkIV camera, the brand also pulled the covers off an exciting new telezoom lens. The M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS, as its name suggests, is a stabilised optic that thanks to the 2x crop on Micro Four-Thirds cameras gives an effective focal length of 200-800mm.
With such a long focal length (which can be transformed to 400-1600mm when adding Olympus’ 2x converter) it’s no wonder this lens has already pricked the ears of wildlife photographers, especially when you consider the 100-400mm’s compact dimensions as it measures just 205mm long and tips the scales at just 1120g.
With a closest focusing distance across the entire zoom range of 1.3m, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS will also prove useful when trying to frame up smaller objects too and the lens build benefits from hermetic sealing on the entire lens barrel, which Olympus explains provides the same level of dustproof, splashproof and freezeproof performance as the M.Zuiko PRO series of optics so photographers should have peace of mind to shoot in harsh conditions.
The in-lens image stabilisation technology buys the user up to 3 shutter speed steps of compensation back, enabling photographers to handhold the lens rather than be restricted to using a tripod and the 100-400mm optic also includes pro features like a Focus Clutch and a Focus Limiter, too.
The build of the 100-400mm lens features four Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lenses for suppressing colour bleeding, two Super High Refractive Index (Super HR) lenses, and two HR (High Refractive Index) lenses for enhanced image quality. The lens also boasts Olympus’ ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) Coating to reduce ghosting and flare.
It’s worth remembering that because it is a Micro Four-Thirds lens, as well as Olympus Cameras such as the E-M1 MkIII or the new E-M10 MkIV, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS can also be used on Panasonic MFT models like the GH5 or popular G9.
Available from August 20, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS carries a price-tag of just ￡1099.99, which offers photographers a value-for-money route to a long focal length for sports and wildlife photography.
